Do you own an old phone and feel like saying goodbye to it? Replacing the battery can help the iPhone 6 and older models. Besides battery life, it improves their performance too. Read on and see for yourself.
If you own a device that's more than three years old, that doesn't mean it belongs on the scrap heap. After all, the latest system, iOS 12, will run even on the iPhone 5s, which is now five years old. As long as Apple keeps supporting it with the latest operating system and as long as you don't need to own a device with the latest hardware, it will serve you just as well as the newest models.
In June, at WWDC 2019, iOS will be unveiled in what is already its thirteenth version. What that will mean for support of individual models remains to be seen. It's reasonable to assume, though, that the iPhone SE, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (and newer models, naturally) will still support it. Of course, it depends on your personal preferences. But if you don't need to take top-quality photos, and if you don't need to play the latest games or use demanding apps, there's no need to invest in newer models.

A battery replacement brings the iPhone 6 back to life
You do have to bear in mind, though, that these days even an iPhone 6 has to work up a real sweat. Mobile app developers tune their apps for new, more powerful devices, so older ones struggle to keep up. Often, though, their worn-out battery is also to blame. Having it replaced is like a new lease of life for the phone.
It's not for nothing that Apple added the Battery Health feature to iOS. This figure shows the battery's capacity relative to when it was new. A lower capacity can therefore mean fewer hours of use per charge. If you like, you can limit the device's performance and go easier on the battery. But if you don't want to hold back, a battery replacement for the iPhone 6 and older models is the better option. In that case, a new battery will cost you a very reasonable 600 Kč or so.
A visit to an Apple repair shop is certainly worthwhile too if your iPhone 5 needs a new battery (around 500 Kč in this case). Here, though, you have to bear in mind that this really is a device at the end of its life, as it isn't even supported by the latest version of iOS.

Deleting unneeded content helps too
If you need to revive your device in ways other than hardware alone, though, try a software clean-up of your iPhone. By that we don't mean updating iOS, which you should keep as up to date as possible. First of all, close all the apps in the app switcher and clear out the apps you don't use. Ideally, do this via Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage. There you'll see how much space each app takes up and when you last used it.
Free up as much storage as you can by deleting old and uninteresting photos too. Alternatively, for apps you don't need but don't want to lose, offload them using the Offload App feature. The more clogged your device's storage is, the slower it runs. Such an iPhone clear-out of unnecessary clutter will help it run noticeably more reliably.
It's a question of investment
If you look at the history of the iPhone and the current trend, repairing an iPhone 5 may no longer seem to have much of a future. Even though it costs next to nothing, the phone's best years are behind it and it will soon reach the end of the road anyway, because it will no longer run most apps.
Thanks to its iOS 12 support, the outlook for the iPhone 5s is considerably brighter. Here it's entirely up to you whether you're happy with this compact phone, which already offers a high level of security thanks to Touch ID. Despite its age, you can use it today to pay with Apple Pay, which only burst onto the Czech market at the beginning of the year.
Repairing an iPhone 6 can still be well worth it, though. It was, after all, Apple's first iPhone to bring a 4.7-inch display in the smaller version and a 5.5-inch one in the Plus model. Even though bezel-less phones are all the rage right now, this generation is still perfectly usable, because Apple stuck with the same phone design for another three years. What's more, an iPhone 6 display replacement, should you need one, will cost you only around 1,600 Kč. And that can still be better value than buying a new device.
The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus generation, meanwhile, is almost certainly worth saving, whether that means just replacing the battery or a broken display as well. At the very least if you wanted to sell it, because the cost of this Apple repair will come back to you in the overall selling price. What's more, the iPhone 6s is currently quite a sought-after item – just take a look across the second-hand marketplaces.
