What to do when your iPhone won't charge (the connector isn't working)

Is your iPhone not charging even though it's plugged into the socket? You can easily fix the most common problems with a faulty charging connector yourself. We'll show you how.

You plug the charger into your phone, but the phone isn't charging even though the charger is in the socket? What could the problem be?
You can easily fix the most common cause of this problem yourself within a minute. We'll show you how.

Faulty connector – phone won't charge

1. Clogged connector

Even if you treat your phone with the utmost care, the charging connector simply gets clogged up. What's more, every time you charge the phone you push the dirt further in, until a nice little layer gradually builds up. A typical sign is that the charging connector won't go "all the way in" or your charger works only in a certain position. A clogged connector is the most common charging problem with phones.

The solution is simple – clean the clogged connector. Use a clean small brush or, alternatively, a needle. Work carefully and gently, ideally under a lamp. Don't use any cleaning agents.

2. Faulty charger

The charging cable gets a lot of use and a lot of strain. It often becomes damaged through prolonged use. If the damage isn't directly visible, borrow a charger from someone else and test it. If that one works without any problem, it's time to buy a new charging cable.

With the iPhone 8 and later models, you can also opt for:

  • a more powerful type of charger

The original iPhone box comes with a 5 W charger as standard. Apple does, however, also offer more powerful 12W, 18W and even 61W accessories. The advantage is a shorter charging time. You needn't worry about damaging the device – Apple designs its devices to draw only as much power as they need.

  • wireless charging

No more cables. Just place the phone on a charging mat and it charges.

3. Faulty charging connector

Cleaning the connector didn't help? Then there's no avoiding a visit to a repair shop. A specialist will clean the connector professionally or, where appropriate, suggest a replacement if the charging connector has suffered more serious damage. The price of replacing the connector depends on the phone model (see our complete price list); for an iPhone 6, for example, a new connector will cost you 740 Kč.
