The most common fixes for iPhone speaker problems
- Check that the phone isn't in Silent mode or connected to another device via Bluetooth
Does that sound too basic? Perhaps, but how many times have you switched the sound to silent mode at the cinema and left it that way until you noticed the missed calls?
Likewise, check for a connection to Bluetooth headphones in Settings > Bluetooth.
- Check whether the speaker really is to blame
Connect headphones to the phone. Does the sound play without any problems? Then it really is the speaker that isn't working.
- Fix the sound settings on the device
Go to Settings > Sounds. Drag the "Ringer and Alerts" slider to the left and to the right.
Note: if the "Ringer and Alerts" control is greyed out, the speaker really will most likely need repairing.

- Restart
A force restart helps with most sound problems. The procedure differs from model to model, so read our guide to resetting an iPhone. Why do we list this fix only after the previous points? Frequent "hard resets" aren't good for the device, so use one only once you've exhausted the other options.
- Clean the receiver and the speakers
Don't skip this step even if one of the steps above gets the device working again. Looking after your phone regularly not only keeps it working properly but also extends its lifespan.
How do you clean it properly?
Forget sharp objects and toothpicks, and don't blow into the phone either. The best tools for cleaning these delicate parts are fine, thin brushes or a single-tuft toothbrush (unused, of course).
Soft, lint-free cloths are also suitable for cleaning phones and other electronic devices (you can buy them in shops that sell iPhones or in repair shops, or else at an optician's). At a chemist's you can also buy wet wipes made specially for electronics, which disinfect the device as well. It's worth remembering that phones, mice and keyboards tend to be the biggest collectors and network providers of viruses and bacteria. We should give them almost the same care as our hands.
